I have had the opportunity to be part of the Hannahville Indian Community the last three years in various capacities. This included: summer teacher, basketball/golf coach and 6th grade teacher. The Hannahville Potawatomi Indian Community is a federally recognized Potawatomi tribe residing in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, approximately 15 miles west of Escanaba on a reservation. My most current position held is a student teacher for the 6th grade level. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with these children from various cultural backgrounds in a positive learning environment. I feel confident that I have been a positive role model and mentor to these students for the past four months. Even though I have made tremendous strides with them, they have taught me a lot as a teacher and mentor. They taught me patience, perseverance, hard work and that anything is possible.
By being the varsity boys basketball coach for the last two years has been a very rewarding experience for both the players and myself. The growth and maturity on and off the court was rewarding to me as a coach and mentor. The basketball program as whole has been taken to a new level and I think I did that by incorporating set guidelines and discipline for my players. "Making the boys accountable in and out of the classroom will reflect what they do on the basketball court".
I also had the experience working within an eight-week Kids Zone Program during the summer. I was a summer teacher at the 6th grade level and the program involved creating a positive curriculum for the children to thrive socially and academically. The curriculum included: arts and crafts, physical fitness, objective materials, math/reading concepts and classroom activities. Below are some pictures of my experience at Hannahville:
